Heirleaf exists because the best stories in a family are usually told out loud, at a table, and never written down. We made a way to write them down exactly as they're told.

What we do differently

A machine doesn't write your words: What gets printed is what the person wrote or said. We don’t polish it, tidy it up or turn it into handsome prose. If they answer by speaking, a machine transcribes it, and they can correct it before it goes into the book. Spelling slips are pointed out; the person decides, one by one, whether to fix them.
One payment, no clock: $49, once. No subscription, no renewal and no window inside which you have to finish. We couldn’t put you on a clock if we wanted to: there is nothing to renew.
The file is yours and doesn't depend on us: You download a PDF and print it wherever you like, as many times as you like. If Heirleaf closed tomorrow, your book would still be on your computer and on your shelf.

Meet the founder

I made Heirleaf because of my grandfather. He died three months before I was born.

He had an extraordinary life. I can read the odd news story about things he did, but I don't know what he was like: what he thought, what he liked, how he spoke. My mother tells me a little, not much, and nobody ever asked him the questions I would ask him today.

Getting to know the life of someone you love, as they told it, is a gift. That's why at Heirleaf nobody changes what a person says: the way someone speaks is one of the most personal things they have. So often we recognize someone just by the way they write.

People's stories should be able to pass from one generation to the next. That's what Heirleaf is for.
